The Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at IU School of Medicine has demonstrated its leadership in excellent resident education for over 47 years. The program provides each resident with side-by-side or remote-viewing educational staffing sessions with faculty for all diagnostic cases, and up to 10 clinical or academic elective rotations. Continuous feedback from these national experts is carefully tailored to the resident’s level and progress. Residents grow in leadership and ownership of the clinical service through their essential involvement on each radiology subspecialty service.
The patient population served by the radiology team at IU School of Medicine in Indianapolis is incredibly varied. Residents train at three Level-1 Trauma centers in downtown Indianapolis including the world-renowned Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health; Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital, the city’s recently constructed county hospital; and IU Health Methodist Hospital, the largest private-practice hospital in the state. Residents also rotate through IU Health University Hospital, the state’s epicenter of academic tertiary and quaternary referrals, and interpret examinations for a variety of community hospitals. These hospitals are all within a quick walk, drive or shuttle ride of each other. In addition, fourth-year radiology residents have the opportunity to take elective rotations at outlying community hospitals to experience a more private practice-like radiology experience in Breast Imaging, Interventional Radiology, General Radiology, or the ABR 15-month pathway to dual certification in Pediatric Radiology.
