At the Indianapolis campus, located downtown, IU School of Medicine offers the full range of medical education programs, including an undergraduate health professions program, MD coursework and clinical training, graduate degree programs in basic sciences, and graduate medical education as well as dual degree programs and more. Brain health program fuels clinical and research advancements of new Alzheimer’s disease treatments in Indiana

Over the past year-and-a-half, more than 100 people have received new disease-modifying drugs for Alzheimer’s disease at the Indiana University Health Neuroscience Center in downtown Indianapolis, and that number grows weekly. Not only are the patients among the first people in the country to receive the treatment, but they’re contributing to the work of researchers from the IU School of Medicine who are actively studying the long-term effects of the drugs.

Nicole Fowler, PhD, MHSA

Fowler named Klapper Family Scholar

Nicole Fowler, PhD, MHSA, has been named the Klapper Family Scholar in Aging and Family Caregiving Research. The role was created in 2024 by the Klapper Family Foundation – an Indianapolis-based nonprofit built by Indiana University alums David I. and Mary “Betty” Klapper – and is intended for a full-time member of the IU School of Medicine faculty “whose research focuses on advancing the science of caregiving in older adults and will be an investigator in the IU Center for Aging Research.”

Surgeon leading nationwide registry to evaluate effectiveness of new tool to remove blood clots of stroke patients

Every 70 to 90 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke or a mini stroke. Large vessel occlusions, which require a thrombectomy, account for 10-15% of total ischemic strokes.  A multicenter study led by Kaustubh Limaye, MD, an associate professor of clinical neurology, neurological surgery and radiology and imaging sciences at the IU School of Medicine found that a novel device used to surgically treat patients with large vessel occlusions — a severe type of ischemic stroke — is a safe and effective way to remove blood clots in the brain.
