Indiana University School of Medicine faculty are required to use Elements to track activities related to teaching, research and service. This page provides information regarding the software rollout, use and requirements.

Tracking Faculty Activity

Keeping track of teaching, research and service activities can be challenging. Indiana University uses Elements software to help faculty members document their activities, making them readily available for faculty annual reviews.

About Elements Software

Elements software offers a new way to manage your teaching, research and service activities and streamline the faculty annual review process. Rolling out in fall 2025 at IU School of Medicine, Elements replaces DMAI and offers a smoother experience and more robust reporting tools for data visualization and use.

Rollout timeline

Much of Indiana University rolled out the use of Elements in fall 2024. However, the School of Medicine chose to work with the software developer to implement customized data feeds that are unique and necessary for our faculty — including improved data input from internal and external sources.

  • IU School of Medicine continues to work with the University Information Technology Services (UITS) and CHRIS database teams, as well as the vendor, to finalize custom feeds. While the software is technically available for faculty use now, these new features will significantly reduce the amount of manual entry required by faculty.

  • We anticipate that the software — with school-level customizations — will be ready for use by fall 2025.

  • Elements will be fully in use in time for faculty annual reviews that begin in January 2026.

What does this mean for you?

All faculty will be required to confirm data feeds are correct and enter any additional research, teaching and service activities from the year 2025 before faculty annual reviews begin in January 2026.

More information is coming soon.

The IU School of Medicine is working to ensure the Elements rollout is live in time for annual reviews beginning in January.

We know faculty will have questions. And while we don't have all of the answers yet, we will keep you informed as well as possible as we move forward.

Here are some ways you can stay informed:

  • This webpage will be updated frequently with details, as they become available. Bookmark the page and check back frequently for updates.

  • The weekly FAPD newsletter, Things to Know This Week, will include regular updates. Make it a practice to look for and read that newsletter in your IU inbox on Monday mornings.

  • We will be producing a frequently asked questions (FAQs) document that is both print-ready and available online as the rollout progresses. Watch this page for a link, coming soon.

  • The fall All-School Meeting will include an update about the rollout and the changes coming to faculty reviews.
