David Gunderman, PhD, an Indiana University School of Medicine student in the Class of 2026 and president of the Medical Student Council, was chosen for the United States Public Health Service's prestigious 2025 Excellence in Public Health Award.

This honor recognizes medical and pharmacy students who have made meaningful contributions to public health — particularly in advancing the goals of Healthy People 2030 and the Surgeon General’s priorities. Awardees are also recognized for their demonstrated leadership and dedication in promoting wellness and healthy communities.

“I’m honored to be selected for the award,” Gunderman said. “The recognition means so much to me, especially as it highlights the collective efforts of the individuals and organizations I’ve had the privilege to work with during medical school.”

Among those with whom Gunderman has worked are Mental Health America - Wabash Valley Region, the Hoosier Public Health Corps, the IU Student Outreach Clinic, the Medical School Council, and the Finding Inspiration and Resilience in Medicine conference.
